Looking for the perfect quick and cosy autumn make? These crochet pumpkins are one of my favourite seasonal projects – simple, satisfying and endlessly versatile. Worked in the round and completely no-sew, they come together in no time at all.
I designed them with a crisp cotton yarn for a modern finish, but because gauge isn’t critical, you can use almost any yarn you have to hand. Try a classic orange for a traditional pumpkin patch look, or experiment with neutrals and pastels for something a little different.
This post includes a free simple version of the pattern (scroll down) so you can get making right away. How to Customise Your Pumkins
One of the joys of these pumpkins is just how easy they are to make your own. The simplest way to customise is by switching up your yarn and hook. The Free Premium PDF includes gauge, hook and finished size information for both King Cole Pricewise DK and Hobbycraft’s WI Soft and Smooth Aran, as well as the original Paintbox Cotton DK (all shown in the slide show above) to help you make your choice. The key thing to remember when choosing a different yarn and hook is to aim for a dense fabric that hides the stuffing but still has enough flexibility to curve into shape.
Feeling adventurous? Try adjusting the shaping: remove or add a set of increase/decrease rounds to change the width, pr work extra pain rounds in the middle to add height. In the photo opposite the smallest pumpkin (taupe) skips one increase/decrease set, the middle (cream) follows the pattern as written, and the largest (orange) adds an extra set for a taller, plumper finish.

Pattern Notes
- The pumpkin is worked in joined rounds. The ch1 at the start of each round does not count as a stitch. As such, the first stitch of the round should be worked into the stitch at the base of the chain. Do not turn.
- If you would like to make your pumpkin scented you can add the teabags as instructed after Rnd 14. Please note that if you do so, the pumpkins should not be machine washed (or soaked in any way).
- Stitches are made into both loops of the stitch below unless otherwise indicated.
- The total stitch count is shown at the end of each round in brackets [ ].

Pumpkin Pattern - Instructions
Main Pumpkin
Starting at the base of the pumpkin, work upwards in joined rounds without turning.
With 2.5mm hook and Yarn A.
Rnd 1: Start with MR, ch2 (does not count as st here and throughout), 6htr into MR, join. [6]
Rnd 2: Ch1, (BLO dc, FLO htr, BLO dc) in each st, join. [18]
Rnd 3: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, (BLO htr, FLO htr, BLO htr) in following st, BLO in next st) x 6, join. [30]
Rnd 4: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, FLO htr in following st, (BLO htr, FLO htr, BLO htr) in next st, FLO htr in following st, BLO dc in next st) x 6, join. [42]
Rnd 5: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, FLO htr in following 2sts, (BLO htr, FLO htr, BLO htr) in next st, FLO htr in following 2sts, BLO in next st) x 6, join. [54]
Check for gauge.
Rnds 6-11: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, FLO htr in following 7sts, BLO in next st) x 6, join. [54, 6 Rnds]
Rnd 12: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, I-htr2tog, FLO htr in following 3sts, I-htr2tog, BLO dc in next st) x 6, join. [42]
Rnd 13: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, I-htr2tog, FLO htr in following st, I-htr2tog, BLO dc in next st) x 6, join. [30]
Rnd 14: Ch1, (BLO dc in next st, I-htr3tog, BLO dc in next st) x 6, join. [18]
Being careful not to overstuff, add the stuffing to the pumpkin.
If you would like to create a scented pumpkin add your teabags either side of the centre. More teabags will create a stronger scent but be careful not to place any through the centre line of the pumpkin where we will be cinching.
Rnd 15: Ch1, (dc in first st, I-dc2tog) x 6, join. [12]
Rnd 16: Ch1, I-dc2tog x 6, join. [6]
At the end of Rnd 16, fasten off with a long tail, weave through the FLO of the final 6sts and pull gently to close. Using a tapestry needle, pull the tail straight down through the centre of the pumpkin to come out through the starting MR. Pull the tail so that the top of the pumpkin cinches in. Secure the thread and repeat in the opposite direction. This can be repeated a few times depending on how cinched you want your pumpkin to be. Once you are happy with your shape, secure and bury the thread inside of the pumpkin.
Stem
With 2.5mm hook and Yarn B.
Rnd 1: Using standing dc, join Yarn B to any available front loop of Rnd 14, dc in remaining 11 front loops around, join (Pics 7 and 8). [12]
Rnds 2-4: Ch1, dc in each st, join. [12, 3 Rnds]
Stuff the stem.
Row 5: Ch1, I-dc2tog x 6, join. [6]
At the end of Rnd 16, fasten off, weave the tail through the FLO of the final 6sts and pull gently to close. Bury the thread inside of the pumpkin.
